Even if you are a casual movie lover, you have no doubt heard of the internet famous Criterion Closet, a physical closet owned by the Criterion Collection Office, filled with the titles of all the movies distributed by the home video distribution company. And you may have seen viral videos of almost every celebrity you can name – from famous actors like Martin Scorsese and Bon Junho, such as Cate Blanchett and Isabel Happart – you can choose your beloved films from the professionally stored shelves in your closet and spit out why you have those titles when they are.
And this weekend, on Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, June 8th, you can have your own Criterion closet experience when the mobile pop-up version rolls up to Santa Monica.

Partnering with American Cinematheque at Aero Theater (1328 Montana Avenue). This combines with that strange week: Despair Festival cinema. Inside, there are over 1,000 imprint titles from the Criterion collection, including box sets and releases from contemporary lines of Eclipse and Janus.
Each attendee takes 3 minutes to wash the closet shelves, allowing up to 5 guests to visit the closet at once. Excitingly, you can make it like an Ayo Edebiri by recording your own Criterion Closet video. You will receive a Polaroid photo featuring your choices, a free Criterion tote bag and a printed pocket guide to take it home.
Film lovers can purchase up to three videos with a 40% discount to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Criterion this year. (Of course, I recommend getting a copy of one of the most beautifully captured films of Los Angeles.) There is also a limited selection of Criterion Merchs available to buy.
Again, you won’t need to book or advanced tickets to visit the Criterion Mobile Closet in Los Angeles this week.
