“Where is your good sense, President?” Newsom asks in the LA protests.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced his plan Sunday evening to sue the Trump administration over the president’s decision to order the National Guard to Los Angeles to protect federal immigration officials.

Newsom made a presentation during an interview with MSNBC. Chaos unfolded on the streets of downtown L.A., with protesters setting fires, throwing rocks and other objects at law enforcement, and attacking officers with fireworks.

Newsom was asked to direct his comments to the President, assuming he was watching the broadcast.

“Where is your decency, Mr. President? Stop. I’ll retract this order,” Newsom said. “It’s illegal and unconstitutional…it’s immoral. You’re creating the conditions that you claim to be settling, you’re not, you’re putting the lives of real people at risk.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom speaks directly to President Trump in an interview with MSNBC. June 8, 2025.

Newsom said he acted unconstitutionally when the Trump administration took over control of the National Guard without coordinating with him.

This development appears to be the first time in decades when the state’s National Guard has been revitalized without demand from the governor. This is a major escalation for those who tried to hamper the administration’s efforts to deport the U.S.

“This is a serious moment, a serious leadership is needed, a time to become the commander of the Chief of the United States. And if you want to work in a relationship of trust and truth in our founder spirit, I have your back.

Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass denounced increasingly aggressive protests over Trump’s decision to deploy security guards, calling it a move designed to rob tension. They both urged the protesters to maintain peace.

“What we’re seeing in Los Angeles is the disruption caused by the administration,” she said at an afternoon press conference. “This is about another agenda and not about public safety.”

The National Guard was deployed in the Los Angeles area after two days of protests over federal immigration enforcement broke out.

The demonstration began in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, then spread to the Latino city of Paramount and nearby Compton on Saturday. These protests were sparked by federal agents arresting immigrants on Friday in various locations, including in the fashion district of LA and the parking lot at Home Depot.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
