A search was underway for six missing people Sunday night after a small plane crashed in the San Diego waters that afternoon, authorities said.
The U.S. Coast Guard received reports that the twin engine Cessna 414 had crashed three miles west of Point Roma at 12:45pm. The debris fields were off the coast of the area, where water is estimated to be 200 feet deep, according to the Coast Guard.
Several agencies worked together to scrutinize the area for survivors on Sunday afternoons and evenings. This includes Air and Marine Coast Guard crews, Air and Marine Customs Border Patrol crews, San Diego Harbor Police Boat crews, and San Diego Lifeguard crews.
No one had been found at 11:30pm, Coast Guard Officer Ryan Graves told the Times. The Crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Sea Otters remained on the scene overnight to continue the search, and the crew of the helicopters were set to rejoin the effort at the first light, he said.
Local resident Tyson Whislovsky witnessed a crash Sunday afternoon while surfing near Point Loma.
“I saw him come down at an angle. He wasn’t flying straight to the ground,” Whistlowski told NBC4 News. “The next time he came out of the clouds, he went straight into the water. Full throttle.”
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash. Information regarding the identity of the missing person was not immediately available.
