Federal authorities on Monday charged Service Employees United Nations California President David Fuerta with criminal charges in a conspiracy to block officers for his alleged actions during last week’s immigration enforcement raid.
Fuerta, 58, will be taking place at the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles starting Friday and will be her first appearance in federal courthouse Monday afternoon. He faces felony charges for up to six years in federal prison, according to the US Lawyer’s Office in Los Angeles.
His attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Fuerta was detained and injured while recording a workplace immigration attack in downtown LA on Friday. He was treated at a hospital and transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center.
Nine people have been indicted by the federal government after being protested, according to the US Lawyer’s Office in LA.
The larry is scheduled in more than a dozen cities across the United States by members of Los Angeles and other supporters calling for the end of Fuerta’s release and the workplace immigration attacks. California Sens. Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla sent letters to the Department of Homeland Security and Justice on Monday, demanding a review of Fuerta’s arrest.
American Atty. The Los Angeles Bill Essay posted a photo on X’s X after his arrest last week, reaching behind his back for Trump’s ally and Hardline conservative, appointed in April. The essay accused Fuerta of obstructing federal authorities’ access to the facility where the search warrants are being implemented.
“Let me be clear. I don’t care who you are. If you block a federal agent, you will be arrested and charged,” the essay writes about X.
The union said in a statement Friday that Furta was detained “while exercising his initial right to observe and document law enforcement activities.”
Calling Furuta “a very well-respected union leader in Los Angeles, a highly respected voice,” Schiff was waiting to attend a Labour leader’s hearing on Monday.
Schiff spoke to reporters in front of a let-brained building intended for immigration and customs enforcement. He said that Fuerta “exercises his legal right to observe these migrant attacks.”
“It’s obviously very traumatic and it’s even more traumatic because it looks like the Justice Department wants to try an example from him,” Schiff said. “But this is part of the Trump playbook. They selectively use the Department of Justice to chase their enemies. That’s what they’re doing.”
According to criminal charges, U.S. Magistrate Judge Margo A. Rocconi has approved search warrants for four businesses “a suspected of illegally hiring an illegal foreigner and forged employment records related to the employee’s circumstances.”
In the affidavit filed in a federal complaint, the special agent overseeing the Homeland Security Investigation, whose name was re-evaluated, said news about the “ice raid” spread quickly throughout LA.
According to the complaint, Fuerta had arrived at Amviance Apparel in Los Angeles’ downtown fashion district by noon Friday and joined several other protesters. The company was one of the sites for workplace raids.
“Protesters, including Huerta, appeared to be communicating with each other in a coordinated effort to disrupt law enforcement activities,” the agent wrote.
Agents wrote that Fuerta was screaming and provoking officers, and later sat in front of the vehicle’s gate where law enforcement was providing a search warrant.
“In addition to sitting in front of the gate, Furuta rose at various times and paced himself in front of the gate to effectively prevent law enforcement from coming and leaving the property through the facility to carry out a search warrant,” the agent wrote in the affidavit. “As far as I know, this gate was the only place where vehicles could enter and exit the facility.”
Agents wrote that they told Fuerta that he would be arrested if he continued to block the doors of atmosphere.
According to the affidavit, Fuerta responded that he could not hear the agent through his mask. Huerta used cursed words, the agent wrote.
According to the complaint, a white law enforcement van tried to pass through the gate, and Fuerta was standing on the road.
“Since the police weren’t cooperative, the officers placed their hands on him to drive him out of the vehicle’s path,” said Fuerta.
“I saw that Fuerta was pushed back, and in response, the officer pushed him to the ground,” the agent wrote. “Then the officer and I handcuffed Fuerta and arrested him.”
Furta issued a statement through his union on Friday, saying: “What happened to me isn’t about me, this is much bigger.
“This is a way we stand together as a community and resist the injustice that is happening. Hardworking people and our families and members of our community are treated like criminals. We all have to oppose this insanity. This is not justice. This is injustice.
Prior to the Monday afternoon hearing, Fuerta’s cousin Marta Gonzalez said she was there to represent her family.
“We’re all heartbroken. We have families all over the world,” she said. “Everyone is watching.”
Gonzalez called Fuerta “the giant of our family.”
“This is very unfair,” she said.
Asked about the weekend protest, she said she thought Fuerta “was it a lot of sparks of it? It pissed so many people off.”
