Ahead of the roughly 100 graduation ceremonies scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, the Los Angeles Unified School District is implementing security measures to protect undocumented immigrant students and their families in the event of a federal attack, officials confirmed Monday.
According to UTLA, the LAUSD teachers’ union, out of the 30,000 immigrant students in the district, roughly 7,500 students and around 7,500 have not been documented.
Principal Alberto Carbafro said perimeters like security have been set up on all graduation sites, with LAUSD police officers doubling their protection efforts.
“All graduation sites are protected,” Carvalho Sad also protects the district by adding school sites, buses and bus stops. “A federal agency that may want to take action in these fun times that we call graduation, not clocks.”
For students and families who fear that additional immigration will be wiped out during summer school, LAUSD has committed to offering students an option for online classes.
“We have two schools in our community where we can see federal vans parked within a few blocks,” explained Karbafro. “No actions have been taken, but we interpret these actions as threatening actions.”
Advising school walkouts, Karbafro emphasized that students are safer at school.
LAUSD also provided a 24/7 hotline that students and families could use to ask questions, and requested resources including legal assistance. The number is 213-443-1300.
