Trump supports Gavin Newsom’s arrest

President Donald Trump has publicly expressed his support for the arrest of the sitting governor.

Speaking to White House reporters on Monday, the president answered questions from Fox News correspondent Peter Doucy, who was ongoing between California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Trump’s “border emperor” Tom Homan.

“Gavin Newsom will boldly come and arrest Tom Homan,” Doucy asked Trump in a video shot by CNN cameras. “Should he do that?”

Trump supported the idea, replied, “If I were Tom I would do it.”

“I think that’s great. Gavin likes advertising, but I think it’s great,” Trump said. He continued by calling Newsom “a nice guy” but was “sorryly incompetent.”

Newsom responded quickly on social media. “This is the day I wanted to never see in America,” he wrote. “I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican. This is a line we cannot cross as a nation. This is an unmistakable step into authoritarianism.”

Comments from the president come after Homan threatened both Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass with potential arrests and federal charges for obstructing ongoing immigration enforcement operations in LA.

In response to Homan’s threat over the weekend, Newsom said in an interview with MSNBC: “He’s a tough guy. Why not?

Newsom and other Democrat leaders criticized Trump’s use of the National Guard to quell the anti-ice immigration protests that changed violence in Los Angeles over the weekend, saying the escalation that exerted strength only led to further issues. Newsom has also announced plans to sue the Trump administration over the development.

Trump pointed out that he would be happy to bring in the US Marines if he felt the situation wanted it. Trump also confirmed Homan’s warning to officials and said if they were out of the way they would “face a judge.”

“I think his major crimes are running for the governor because he did such a bad job,” Trump said at a press conference in Washington, D.C., when pressed by reporters about the crimes that Newsom had pledged to assure a possible arrest.

Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville has announced his candidacy for state governor, but is one of the most notable Trump allies who publicly reflect Newsom’s call for arrest.

In a post on X, Tuberville wrote: “LA looks like a third world country. It’s in charge of anarchists, law enforcement is being attacked, there’s no rule of law. I’ll lock him up.”

Newsom responded to the former Auburn University football coach, telling him to “stick to football.”

Tony Kurzweil contributed to this report.
