The second night of the curfew in downtown Los Angeles was lifted Thursday morning following a night of protests that erupted at the moment that spread from Los Angeles to Koreatown, which stood on the border of skirmishes between the Los Angeles police station and protesters.
In response to growing protests, Marines have been mobilized to help the National Guard. The 700 Marines work from the Naval Weapons Station in Seal Beach and just finished their training Wednesday.
The training focused on understanding rules of de-escalation, crowd control, and using force.
Together with the 4,000 National Guard forces currently in federal government by President Trump, they form “Task Force 51.”
In addition to protecting federal buildings, the task force commander said he has the job of protecting federal officials, such as soldiers and Marines working together to carry out “federal functions” and law enforcement.
This includes using ice during protests and attacks.
“They are allowed to temporarily detain and wait for law enforcement to come and arrest them,” said Major General Scott Sherman, commander of Task Force 51. “They won’t arrest them.”
The commander also said when members of the task force were on our streets they would not have ammunition in their weapons, but would have it to their people.
