A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order on Thursday directing President Donald Trump to return control of the National Guard to California.
The order, which came into effect at noon Friday, said the deployment of security guards was illegal and both violated the 10th Amendment and exceeded Trump’s legal authority.
The White House did not immediately comment on the ruling.
US District Judge Charles Breyer said Trump stomped his boundaries in ordering the deployment of around 4,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles after protesting immigration crackdowns.
It was not immediately clear how it would change the situation on earth.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom appealed to block security deploying against his wishes. California later filed an emergency motion to ask the judge to stop assisting in the migrant attack.
He argued that the military was originally deployed to protect federal buildings, and wanted the court to stop the court from helping to protect immigration agents during the attack.
In a broad ruling, the judge ruled that Trump was not properly calling for security guards in the first place.
Speaking in an interview with the Associated Press and other media outlets, Major General Scott Sherman said as of Wednesday, about 500 security forces were trained to accompany agents on immigration operations. Photos of guard soldiers providing security to agents have already been distributed by immigration officers.
Sherman is the commander of Task Force 51 and oversees the security and Marines sent to Los Angeles.
Newsom characterized federal military intervention in the country’s second largest city as the onset of much broader efforts by Trump to overturn the political and cultural norms at the heart of the country’s democracy.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass repeated, saying that the deployment of the military was not necessary and intended to undermine local jurisdictions and threaten the city’s large immigrant population.
Earlier that day, Breyer said he was going to take control quickly.
“This country was established in response to the monarch, and the constitution is a document of restrictions. I am trying to figure out where the lines are drawn,” the judge said before the packed court.
