SACROMENTO – President Trump longs for attention and leaps into every depth to grab it. However, this time he unconsciously gave valuable attention to his enemy.
Trump is unnecessarily more ridiculous with the National Guard forces, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom was given a prime-time speaking slot to National Cable TV and a prime-time speaking slot to respond.
“We respect their service, we respect their courage,” Newsom said of the military. “But we don’t want streets militarized by our own army, not California, and not anywhere.
“California may be the first, but obviously it won’t end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next. Democracy is next. Democracy is attacked right in front of us. The moment we were afraid has arrived.”
I don’t know if the “democracy is being attacked” message has much traction, but maintaining armed combat troops from our streets must be on a sellable pitch.
Anyway, the governor rarely gets national television time to get national television time, even if it’s as short as Newsom. You’ve actually become nominated for president. But the propaganda and starving seated chairman provided cameras to the California governor.
Newsom’s powerful speech probably boosted his stock within the Democrats and revived dormant speculation about the 2028 presidential bid.
The Democratic governor played a nice guy in honor and didn’t soften criticism of the Republican president. Now he was facing California, Newsom and the bully who loved to use our progressive politics as a punching bag. Trump’s Red Supporters love every swipe in this “left coast” state.
Newsom took the opportunity to use his biggest assets. Combined with his telegenic looks, he has irreplaceable communication skills.
He laid out his version of setting a relatively peaceful protest against federal immigrant raids on destructive street violence. And it’s the correct version with an objective account.
On Saturday, federal immigration agents “joined from an unmarked van” near the parking lot at Home Depot, according to Newsom.
Police were sent to maintain peace, and most of them were successful, the governor continued. However, later on, tear gas, rubber bullets and flash bang hand rena bullets were used.
Trump then deployed 2,000 California National Guard “unlawfully and without reason,” the governor allegedly.
“The president’s abuse of brave power has been inflamed by the fiery situation. Anxiousness about his family and friends has intensified. The protests have started again.
Newsom warned, “Such criminal conduct will not be tolerated. A complete halt.” And hundreds were arrested.
But he stressed: “This situation was caught up in and concentrated on just a few square blocks of downtown. But that’s not what Donald Trump wanted.
In Trump’s twisted view, if he hadn’t sent the National Guard, “Los Angeles would be wiped out completely.” Don’t worry that violence was limited to several downtown blocks, which are just a few of the cities over 500 square miles.
“We will free Los Angeles and make it free and clean again,” the president promised.
Veteran Republican strategist Mike Murphy correctly told CNN: “He illuminates the fire as an arsonist and then claims to be a firefighter.”
It reminds me of the 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson passed the Tonkin Resolution Bay manufactured by Congress, allowing us to significantly escalate our involvement in the Vietnam War. Johnson reported North Vietnam’s attack on a US destroyer, which many experts concluded later did not happen.
But I think Trump is primarily obsessed with attracting attention. He knows he gets it by being provocative. Don’t worry about the accuracy of his words or the wisdom of his actions. Sending the Marines was certainly eye-opening. Stagening a military parade on his birthday is also an abuse of the army for attention, personal glory, and his own use of power.
He would say something provocative without thinking about it: one day, the tariffs paused the next day. He boasts sending the waters of the San Joaquin Valley to Los Angeles and fighting for a fire that is physically impossible to deliver.
The poll discoveries that should have pleased Trump while he was in politics with immigration and La Turmoil have been released.
California’s Independent Public Policy Institute reports that it no longer supports Californians in providing public health care to immigrants living here. In a survey before the LA trouble broke out, between 58% and 41% of adult state residents were opposed.
In contrast, the 2021 PPIC vote found that Californians support 66% to 31% of state healthcare to undocumented immigrants.
Voting Director Mark Bardassare concluded that there is primarily public opposition in the view that California taxpayers cannot afford expensive programs.
In fact, Newson proposes cutting the state’s multi-billion dollar program that provides Medi-Cal coverage to undocumented immigrants as the state’s budget spurts red ink.
Given all the rhetoric about the LA protest, the statement that particularly impressed me came from freshman Mark Gonzalez (D-Los Angeles), whose downtown district is spreading from Koreatown to Chinatown.
“The rocks thrown into officers, CHP cars and Waymo cars lit by arson on the 101 highway have nothing to do with immigration, justice or the values of our community,” he said in a statement Sunday. “These were not protesters. They were instigators. Their actions are reckless and dangerous, and they play exactly what Trump wants.”
Gonzalez is the liberal former LA County Democrats who stuck to his point. Hoodlam is unacceptable.
And thanks to Trump, Newsom was able to make similar points about the president on national television. His dangerous and selfish behavior is also unacceptable.
