Gov. Gavin Newsom went after Donald Trump on Thursday following a judge’s decision to block the mobilization of the National Guard troops in Los Angeles.
At a press conference, Newsom said he was “satisfied” with Judge Charles Breyer’s decision to return California State Guard control to governor at noon Friday.
“Today is really about the test of democracy, and today I passed the test,” Newsom said. “Donald Trump tested that limit and did so consistently, but today’s order makes it clear that he has not or has not surpassed the constitutional constraints.”
Newsom says that when the National Guard is under his control, he is returning to border security assistance, working on enforcement of counter drugs and enforcement of fentanyl. He added that they will also work on vegetation and forest management in preparation for wildfire season.
Newsom also criticized Trump’s birthday military parade for scheduled this weekend, comparing the planned exhibit to an exhibition by Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
“You want to be weak and show your strength along with dictators around the world, and show off your strength, weakness that bothers your dear leader on your birthday,” the news said. “What an embarrassing. Honestly, it’s small enough to get it. How weak.”
California Gov. Gavin Newsom asked the court earlier this week to put an emergency halt on troops supporting federal immigration agents who raided areas that led to protests over the weekend and throughout the week.
After hearing debate over California’s demand to limit the scope of the missions of the Los Angeles National Guard and Marines as a demonstration over immigration enforcement, US District Judge Breyer opposed the Justice Department’s claim that civil unrest in downtown Los Angeles must meet military force in a 36-page ruling.
