Hundreds of U.S. Marines were able to quickly join the military task force that gathered in Los Angeles in response to immigration enforcement protests, but it is unclear whether they will be reverted to their previous command before they can enter the streets.
On Thursday, the US Northern Command confirmed that the Marines had mobilized to LA and that they could implement “mission orientation and familiarization” in the area and merge with thousands of national security guards already ordered in the city.
Marines will join Task Force 51, the name of the US military for hundreds of troops deployed in the Los Angeles area to protect federal buildings and federal agents.
But just as Marines were one step closer to joining the National Guard on a federal protection mission, President Donald Trump was given a legal blow that made him wonder how long military presence would remain on the streets of LA.
Trump ordered the National Guard to the city without coordinating with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass or California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The use of the military to quell civil unrest without the demands of local leaders is considered very unusual and, in the newspaper’s view, may be illegal. Newsom’s case met legal hurdles after a federal judge denied a request for an urgent suspension on military deployment.
Instead, a formal hearing of the temporary restraining order took place Thursday, and ultimately Newsom’s claim was successful.
A federal judge ruled that Trump would not follow “congressional mandatory procedures for his actions,” and ruled that control of the California State Guard would be seized from Newsom’s control because the state governor was illegal and violated the 10th amendment to the US Constitution.
Trump was then ordered to return control of the California State Guard to Newsom. The president has not yet responded to a court decision.
“The courts have just confirmed what we all know. The military belongs to the battlefield, not the streets of our city,” Newsom told social media. “Now we’re ending the illegal militarization of Los Angeles.

The Trump administration argued that mobilization of troops is needed by local governments that are not doing enough to protect federal agents carrying out immigrant raids in various parts of the area.
Last Friday, the first targeted enforcement operation took place in downtown LA and in the nearby Westlake area. After several people were loaded into unmarked vehicles at downtown clothing stores, the crowd developed along with many people screaming at federal agents and even throwing items at cars.

Those overnight protests became destructive in the following days, reporting looting and vandalism, and multiple driverless Waymotaxi torched.
Trump and his allies have characterized those protests as spreading throughout Los Angeles, leaving them confused afterwards. The reality is that protests and subsequent looting and vandalism took place mainly in parts of downtown LA, less than a square mile.
Trump called the protesters “troublemakers” and “adgitators,” but Basu and Newsom slammed the president back with those same barbs, incite a flame of anxiety for political gain and advocating for moving forward with immigration goals.
The downtown curfew has moderately tamed protests over the past two days, but National Guard Brigadier General Scott Sherman told ABC News he hoped it would “ramp up” in the next few days. Sherman has taken command of the Federal Conservation Task Force in Los Angeles, but if there is a role he will execute in the next few days, it has yet to be seen.
On Saturday, a long-standing military parade will finally take place to celebrate the Army’s 250th anniversary, and as we watch the White House celebrate Trump’s birthday, counter arguments are planned in hundreds of places around the world.
Local leaders gently urged at these demonstrations in the hopes of reducing the chances of violence erupting between public and law enforcement officials and their military counterparts.

According to the U.S. Northern Command, military personnel are given the authority to detain individuals during protests if they commit crimes or interfere with immigration operations, but arrests are ultimately in the jurisdiction of local law enforcement agencies.
“Doctoral Defense Forces on this mission are carrying out ground activities to protect federal functions, personnel and property. If necessary, this assistance may include crowd control and establishment of security perimeters to ensure federal officials perform their duties while being protected from or threats of physical injuries,” military officials said.
