LA Business’s Downtown Weekend Protest Preparation – NBC Los Angeles

Some businesses in downtown Los Angeles have stepped into windows before the weekend demonstrations and taking other precautions before the intense week of demonstrations.

Parts of downtown Los Angeles (several blocks around City Hall and the Federal Detention Center) became epicenter this week in protests over the immigration enforcement attack. The protests remained mostly peaceful during the day, but violence has been triggered in the community as arrests have been reported for looting, vandalism and other crimes at around 20 businesses, including looting, vandalism and other harm.

Some shops and shops are already boarding the windows before a planned demonstration this weekend, scheduled to begin on Saturday morning.

“Unknown. I think that’s a really weird and creepy feeling,” said Jennifer Song, manager of Obseyo! Little Tokio’s Superette and Cafe Darse. “We got someone who comes out to board just for you to know, for the extra guarantee.

“In the end, I thought it was safer than sorry just knowing that there was a big protest of tomorrow, like the whole country. It’s a bit scary, because it’s always necessary for that bad apple, but it’s so cool to see all the support from the community.”

After Monday night, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced a limited curfew for the area, covering about a square mile of downtown. Arrests have been steadily declining since Monday’s violence.

LAPD arrested one for resisting police officers, pointing lasers on an airship, reported one arrest, and arrested one after detaining one warrant.

Officers were reported to the crowd about people throwing objects containing commercial grade fireworks.

The agency reported 71 arrests and seven arrests for violations of nighttime curfews from Wednesday through Thursday. Police reported more than 200 arrests Tuesday through Wednesday, but most were arrested for illegal legislative and curfew violations.

There were some more serious charges, including assault on police officers and possession of a Molotov cocktail and gun.

Mayor Karen Bass said the curfew was in effect until the arrests drop.

“The curfew is a necessary measure to protect property over several consecutive days of growing across the city for several consecutive days,” said LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell.

A hearing has been set up next week on National Guard command over a legal dispute between President Trump and California. Royal Oaks, NBC4 Legal Analyst, explains today in Los Angeles, on Friday, June 13th, 2025.

Local law enforcement agencies respond to protests and violence with members of the federal national security forces located in local federal buildings. They were expected to be joined by about 700 Marines, activated by the federal government.

Earlier this week, McDonnell said his agency had not been given a formal notice regarding the deployment of Marines in the city, and he said without better coordination, their arrival could “show important logistics and operational challenges for our people who protected the city.”

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday temporarily blocked the orders of a federal judge who directed President Trump to return control of the National Guard forces to California. The California State Guard is usually activated by the governor at the request of the local government.

The Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office were planning to talk about the demonstration this weekend at a press conference Friday afternoon.

The immigration enforcement project is part of President Trump’s massive deportation plan, a central focus of his campaign. On Thursday, Homeland Security’s Department of Christa Noem said the attacks would continue despite a wave of protests spreading across 12 major cities.

The administration highlights arrests that include undocumented individuals convicted of violent crimes. Those caught up in the nationwide attacks include asylum seekers, those who have continued visas and immigrants waiting for a day in immigration courts.
