Minnesota Democrat Rep. Melissa Hortman, still fatally shot on Saturday with a suspect, found earlier this week that the only Democratic vote in the state legislature to eliminate taxpayer-funded health insurance.
“I know people will be hurt by that vote. I worked very hard to get a budget deal that doesn’t include that clause,” she said following the vote that said it was made in the split council to advance the budget. Republicans keep their homes 67-66, while Democrat Farmerabor Party owns the Senate 34-33.
Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot Saturday and were hospitalized after surgery. Hortman’s husband was also killed in the shooting. All four victims are estimated to have been shot by the same suspect who pretended to be police officers.

Although it is considered politically motivated, the specific motivations are unknown as of Saturday afternoon. The Minnesota State Patrol posted a photo on X on Saturday. “No Kings” is the name of a series of nationwide protests that took place on Saturday against the Trump administration.

This tragedy led to the pouring of messages from both sides of the aisle.
“I’ve been described as a horrifying shooting in Minnesota, which looks like a targeted attack on state lawmakers,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Saturday. “Our Attorney General, Pam Bondy and the FBI are investigating the situation and they will prosecute those involved to the fullest extent of the law. Such horrifying violence is not tolerated in the United States. God blesses the great people of Minnesota!”
