The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating law enforcement-related injuries after a man was injured during a protest in downtown Los Angeles last week.
Officers responded to the protests on Alameda and Template Streets around 2:36pm on June 10, saying “several uncooperative demonstrators will refuse to leave the area and will face the officers on the skirmish line.”
The injured man, later identified as 30-year-old Daniel Robert Bill, failed to cooperate with “officially resisting and challenging officers,” LAPD said in a news release.
LAPD said officers used baton techniques and non-fatal ammunition against Bill, but they used team takedowns to detain Bill because it was ineffective.
Bill was taken to a nearby hospital where the finger on his left hand was broken and the injury was determined to require surgical intervention. However, the surgery was delayed and rescheduled the next day.
LAPD said that Force Investigation Unit (FID) investigators have been notified of hospitalization and are investigating the case.
