RICHMOND, Va. — Conservative Richmond radio host John Reid will become the Republican candidate for Virginia’s lieutenant governor after not being opposed in Tuesday’s statewide primary.
Reed was the only man left behind Fairfax County supervisor Pat Herity – the rare Republican office holder of the vote-rich but democratic Washington, DC Metro, resigned from the contest last month, citing health reasons.
Reed is a renowned Republican voice in Central Virginia, previously serving on the Henrico County Republican Committee, representing the RNC in 2024 as a top staff member for former Senator George Allen’s R-VA.
Reed will join current Lt. Col. Winsam Earl Sears on Republican tickets this fall, and Attorney General Jason Miyares will also run to join them for reelection.

Reid has focused his campaign on a united message of “growing” the GOP with numerically narrow political disparities, but that Democrat is often the preferred line in statewide elections.
The first point of his campaign message on his website is centered around education and “indoctrination.”
“His focus is on providing knowledge and critical thinking skills rather than political bias, and preparing students to succeed in a diverse world instead of creating radical activists,” read the line on his website.
On the hot topic of immigration, Reid’s campaign said candidates are “focused on enforcing immigration laws and will not allow the community to ignore them.”
His campaign also opposed the “extinguish” of US heritage by saving landmarks.

Reed’s campaign came across a short-lived controversy when the former critic, the first openly gay man to run statewide in Virginia, was the subject of a perverted picture of himself posted online. Reed denied any ties with the Tumblr account in question, but the controversy has led some Republicans to temporarily call for him to drop out.
Reed, Earl Sears and several top Virginia Republicans gathered in Richmond on Tuesday night to celebrate the all-out winners, including in the lower rooms of the General Assembly.
Democrats currently represent the Virginia House of Representatives 51-49, with Republicans hoping to make the narrow profits they need to take control in November.

Republicans face a tough road in that regard, guarding several seats, particularly along the Richmond Petersburg Turnpike corridor.

Dell. David Owen, R-Goochland, Carrie Coyner, R-Hopewell and R-Williamsburg’s Amanda Batten all hold seats in Democratic-friendly territory.
Miyares runs unopposed at Attorney General Primary on Tuesday, with Gov. Glenn Youngkin being limited in time.
