Angel City is planning to honor one of them this week.
June 20th will be officially declared as Chich Marine Day by the Los Angeles City Council in honor of Chicano Art’s comedians, actors and champions.
The declaration was presented by lawmaker Hugo Soto Martinez (CD13). The Soto Martinez office, explained in a press release, recognizes Marin’s five-year long career in “arts, entertainment and cultural life in Los Angeles and beyond.”

“Cheech Marin is a cultural icon whose work has influenced generations. Through an unwavering commitment to screens, music and art,” Soto Martinez said. “Cheech embodies the creativity, resilience and diversity that makes this city amazing.”
Chich, whose real name is Richard Anthony Marine, was born and raised in Los Angeles. He rose to fame with Tommy Chong in the ’70s as comedy duo Cheech & Chong. When the group broke up in the mid-80s, Marin appeared in the director and starred in Born in East LA. He later starred in films such as “Tin Cup,” “Oncot On a Time in Mexico,” and “Spy Kids.”

He is also a longtime collector and advocate for Chicano Art. Over the past 40 years, he has accumulated one of Chicano Art’s most important private collections. This launched a tour exhibition like the landmark Chicano Vision: American Painters on the Barge.
That advocacy led to a 2022 partnership with the City of Riverside and the Riverside Museum of Art, establishing Chicano Art and Culture’s Cheech Marine Centre, the first facility named in his honor. His own collection is on display at the museum.
Cheech Marine Day will be officially declared in the Los Angeles City Hall council room at 10am on Friday. This coincides with the third anniversary of Chicano Art & Culture’s Chicano Art & Culture’s Chicano Art & Museum.
