In a statement in Los Angeles on Friday, Vice President JD Vance was called California Sen. Alex Padilla “Jose,” and the senator is now responding by calling the case “a little bit.”
The Vice President had answered a question from a media member requesting comment on Trump’s immigration crackdown when he mentioned Sen. Alex Padilla by the wrong name.
“Well, I was hoping Jose Padilla would ask a question here, but unfortunately I think he decided not to show up because there was no theater. That’s all,” Vance said.
Vance had hinted that Sen. Padilla was handcuffed and forced to be removed from a June 12 press conference held by Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem. The Democrat was dragged out of the room after trying to question the DHS secretary.
Senator Alex Padilla will be pushed out of the room as Norm holds a press conference on the recent protest in Los Angeles on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
Senator Padilla posted a short message to X, “The Vice President knows.” [his] name. But that’s not the point. ”
“[Vice President Vance] The focus should be on removing thousands of unnecessary troops from the streets of Los Angeles,” he said, “not a small, small thing.”

Padilla’s posts, including clips from a recent MSNBC interview, doubling what he calls Pettines, as shown by the Trump administration.
“Sadly, this is just an indicator of how trivial and unsafe this administration is,” Sen. Padilla said in an interview with MSNBC. “He’s the US vice president… I think he’ll take the situation in Los Angeles more seriously.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said he spent the podium on Friday calling Vance’s message “an attempt to cause division and conflict.”
“We were able to deal with the violence and vandalism,” Bass said, acknowledging crowd control efforts by the LA Police Department, the LA County Sheriff’s Department and other local law enforcement agencies. “Our streets are peaceful, and even if there is vandalism at that height, you’re talking about hundreds of people that aren’t necessarily related to peaceful protests.”

She also expressed great disappointment in Vance, who calls Sen. Padilla, California’s first Latino senator, by the wrong name.
“Do you dare to disrespect the senator?” asked Bass at her own press conference. “The last time I checked, the Vice President of the United States is the President of the US Senate. You will serve with him today. Can you dare to call him Jose? But I think he looked like someone to you. Well, he’s not just us.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also called out Vance immediately.
“JD Vance served as Alex Padilla in the US Senate,” Newsom said in X. “To call him ‘Jose Padilla’ is not an accident. ”

He almost certainly didn’t mention him, but Vice President Vance used the name “Jose Padilla.” This is the name of a man arrested in 2002 for planning a “dirty bomb” attack on the United States after the September 11th attack.

This Jose Padilla was convicted in federal prison for 17 and a half years from 2007 to 17 and a half years in federal prison for conspiracy against a conspiracy to provide material support to individuals and terrorists of foreign murder, inducements, attacks and terrorists and to provide material support to terrorists. Seven years later, he reattached to 21 years’ prison after Congressman concluded that his first sentence was “too generous.”
He is held at ADX Florence Supermax (the safest prison facility in America). Here, according to inmate search records, he is scheduled to be released on November 12, 2026.
