Huntington Beach held one of the most adorable and action-packed competitions of the year, the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge on Friday and Saturday. This vibrant event will gather some of the nation’s most talented dogs and compete to surf, dive, catch, chase and jump, hoops, and pursue spots on the winner’s stage.
The event will serve as a Western Regional Qualifier where the best-performing dogs advance to the national championships. For many participants and their owners, it’s more than just a contest. It’s lifestyle.
“They are treated like professional athletes,” said Amanda Fleck, who was competing with dogs over the weekend. “So we have something like a training schedule to prepare them, because if they’re fit, they’re unlikely to get hurt. And he wears his back on the track court, helps his muscles and prepares for tomorrow.”

Just like in human sports, tension can run high on the bystanders. The judges may find themselves observing passionate comments from enthusiastic dog owners.
Kama Lushenberg, one of the competition judges, told KTLA that while most of the crowd is supportive and understandable, that is not the norm, you may encounter militant pet parents.

Still, for most attendees, weekends are about friendship and fun. “It’s just fun. She loves water. She’s a retriever. It’s great to be outdoors and see the same people at events over and over again.
As the waves settled and the final scores were tallied, the event once again proved why it became a beloved tradition. It’s not just competition. It celebrates the incredible bond between dogs and their humans, built on athletic ability, training and joy.
