The peace callers ran horses from Paramount to Compton City Hall on Sunday as part of a unified ride against the ongoing immigration attack that swept Southern California.
The Compton Cowboys are a group of equestrian riders who serve the youth in the community in their program and have begun trekking at Home Depot in Paramount. The riding riders traveled to Compton City Hall as a visual metaphor that showed links between the black and brown communities, and condemned the federal attack.
“United will never split” was one of the chants chanted between the vehicles of unity. Participants said they were called to be involved in protecting the community.
“No one is going to save us. We have to come out and get up,” said Hector Gomez Mercardo, a local teacher and one of the ride’s organizers.
As a community educator, Gomez Mercardo said his students saw concerns firsthand during their immigration operations.
“We could see the fears of these kids, the uncertainty of what will happen tomorrow,” he said. “‘Are you going to lose your parents?” It’s where you’re being picked up by your skin color. ”
As federal officials tried to stop protesters from moving forward, some of the people in the crowd started a fire and others jumped into a burned car.
One of the Sunday participants, Enrique Vega, said she grew up around the horse thanks to her father. He said he is passing traditions from one generation to the next, as he fights peacefully what he says is injustice.
“We are proud of Americans, but we are proud of our immigrant sons and daughters,” Vega said. He added the following message to President Donald Trump:
Federal agents attended Compton last week, urging the community to push back the protest. Councilman Mike Gibson, a district representative of Compton, said he and local leaders would condemn the attack.
“I’m heartbroken,” he said. “This is my country. This is my country. This is my city.”
“We will continue to file lawsuits against this administration and win in court,” he added.
