The flags of the California State Capitol and the Capitol Annex swing space will fly with half staff in honor of Sergeant LAPD. Gov. Gavin Newsom announced by Shiou Deng, who was hit and killed early Monday morning.
Authorities said they encountered a recent crash on the 405 highway near Moraga Drive around 2am and stopped his lights and helped him, stopping.
“He left the police vehicle and approached the crash, and was hit from the rear by approaching traffic,” LAPD chief Jim McDonnell said at a morning press conference.
“He was taken to UCLA Medical Center and despite his brave efforts, he didn’t do it. He passed away one day this morning,” McDonnell said.
Deng joined LAPD over 26 years ago. He spent 17 years in the mental assessment unit in the department that handles calls involving people who are involved in a mental health crisis. He was promoted to Sergeant two years ago, and most recently worked in the West Los Angeles division.
He is survived by his wife and parents.
“Jennifer and I are heartbroken by the loss of Sergeant Den, who has dedicated more than 26 years to serving the Los Angeles community with pride and purpose,” Newsmom said in a statement. “We will mourn his family, friends and fellow officers and honor his memory, so that he will never be forgotten.”
