The LA City controller says the authorities are preparing to declare a financial emergency due to several factors, with over 600 layoffs “at the table.”

City controller Kenneth Mezia said massive liability payments, overexpenditures and shortfalls in revenue were the main reasons behind the declaration of the fiscal emergency.

“We have 614 layoffs on the table to balance our budget,” Mezia said at X. [and] Fill in any empty locations. ”

Mejia’s post included a bar graph breaking down the layoffs by department. Of the expected 614 job cuts, 248 are under the “Police-Civilian” category. Other employees, known as “personnel,” constituted the next biggest layoff at 57.

Police – Civilians: 248 Layoffs Personnel: 57 Layoffs Hygiene: 44 Layoff Fires – Pledges – Pledges: 41 Layoff Information Technology Agency: 34 Layoffs General Services: 33 Layoffs Transportation: 29 Layoffs Roadside Services: 24 Layoffs Engineering: 23 Layoffs City Plan: 14 Layoffs City Manager: 10 Layoffs Buildings: 8 Layoffs Light Equity: 7 Layoffs City Clerk: 4 Layoffs Community Investment for Families: 4 Layoffs Disability: 4 Layoffs Neighborhood Empowerment: 4 Layoffs Contract Management: 4 Layoffs Economy and Workforce Development: 4 Layoffs Public Works Commission: 2 Layoffs Aging: 1 Layoffs

In April, LA Mayor Karen Bass announced a $47.9 billion budget, which he said would be at a time of “unprecedented financial challenges” at the time.

The budget was signed earlier this month.

City controller Mejia noted a few days ago that immigrant raid protests cost taxpayers more than $30 million. Additionally, the $5 million loan was approved by the Los Angeles Police Department’s overtime city council during unrest.
