Senator Tim Kane, D-Va. is set to advance all steam in his war power resolution despite reaching a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran on Tuesday.

A fresh ceasefire deal between the fighting nations faced early hiccups, with President Donald Trump accusing both sides of breaking the truce, which has so far been embraced despite widespread skepticism about longevity at Capitol Hill.

And Kane argued that the suspension of the fight actually gave him more credibility in his resolution.

“I think a ceasefire actually gives us the ability to have conversations without the pressure of that.” [Trump’s] We’ve started bombing tomorrow night,” he said.

“The combination of ceasefire and the Israeli people says that the nuclear program has been brought back to at least two or three years. You can really make a deliberate argument that this is worth it,” Kane continued.

“Not Constitution”: Congress invokes new war power resolutions to reject Trump’s strike against Iran

Kaine’s War Power Resolution is designed to check Trump’s power and reaffirm Congress’ constitutional authority to declare war. But whether the weekend strike constituted an act of war that required Congressional approval was a hot topic of debate among lawmakers last week.

The Constitution divides the power of war between Congress and the White House, giving lawmakers the only power to declare war, and the president acts as commander of the army.

A similar bipartisan resolution came into being in the House, but one of the co-sponsors, Rep. Thomas Massey, told Fox News Digital that he was ready to leave if the ceasefire continued.

“If a ceasefire becomes a ceasefire and is held, we won’t ask for a vote,” he said. “We need to hear from Iran and Israel and whether our own president is satisfied that his first attack, the nuclear weapons predicate, is no longer present.”

“Instinct for Restraint”: The Senate separates who will declare war

Kane’s bill could hit the floor in the Senate by Friday, but whether it survives is another matter.

“Grow it up. Let’s vote,” R-Wis said. Senator Ron Johnson told Fox News Digital.

The resolution has the support of Senate minority Whipdick Durbin, D-Ill.

“I’ll support Tim,” Durbin said. “His approach to this is perfectly consistent with the Constitution and I hope that the Senate will rise up as an organisation under the Constitution for its own rights and authority.”
