With pledging free programs and services during the New York City mayor’s campaign, democratic socialist candidate Zoran Mamdani even threatens the much-loved former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
The Mamdani campaign gained great traction in the Mayor’s race in New York City. The Democratic primary is Tuesday, but results are not expected tonight due to the city’s ranked choice-to-option voting system that complicates voting and counting votes.
Mamdani, currently a New York State Senator, is Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. and lawmakers Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y. However, he also gained infamy for his own rights, due to the platform that chocks up the free services he promised to New York residents.
Mamdani says it will fund the promised services by raising taxes for the top 1% of businesses and the wealthiest New Yorkers, raising an extra $10 billion in revenue.

Through Mamdani’s platform, available on his campaign’s website, it leads to his socialist affiliation and support of Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez.
He has pledged to immediately freeze rent for more than 2 million New Yorkers living in rent-stabilized apartments.
He also pledged to establish a New York City Community Safety Bureau. It says it will deploy outreach workers to 100 metro stations, expand gun violence prevention programs and increase funding for the “Hate Violence Prevention Program” by 800%.
Mamdani has also pledged to defend a law that raises the minimum wage in New York City to $30 an hour by 2030.

Another major tenet of Mamdani’s platform is “Preventing Trump” New York City. His website says President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement, tariffs and other policies are “are ripped in New York City’s fabric.” Mamdani’s website says it will enhance the city’s sanctuary urban equipment by evicting ice from all city facilities, terminating cooperation with agencies, increasing legal support for immigrants and protecting personal data.
His website further states that as mayor, Mamdani will make New York City an LGBTQ+ sanctuary city and protect “reproductive rights.”
So, what does all of this bill look like?
According to a Politico report this week, Mamdani’s campaign estimates that it will cost between $5-7 billion to provide universal childcare. His Community Safety Agency will cost up to $450 million new spending, while the city-owned grocery store will cost another $60 million.

Democratic mayoral candidates Brad Lander, Jessica Ramos, Zellner Miley, Andrew Cuomo, Whitney Tilson and Zoran Mamdani will be taking part in a major debate for the Democratic mayor on June 4, 2025 at NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Center Studios in New York.
Mamdani also proposes tripling the city’s $30 billion budget to implement the housing agenda. Meanwhile, free buses are projected to cost around $900 million in annual revenue per year.

Where does the extra money come from? Mamdani’s website says it plans to raise the corporate tax rate to 11.5%. He plans to set an additional 2% tax on people over $1 million a year, which he believes will add $4 billion in taxes per year. He also says he will raise another $1 billion to hire more tax auditors, end non-bid contracts and crack down on the incredible collection from “corrupted landlords.”
Mamdani’s campaign did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
