The family of construction workers detained by federal agents in South Los Angeles are fighting to bring their loved ones into the house.
This video captures video of her father and grandfather, 48-year-old Candida Solis Cortez detaining her. He took place on Friday when he picked up a colleague near the intersection of 79th Avenue and Vermont Avenue. His family says they were shocked when they saw footage of his arrest.
“You can see it on some videos on social media. He remained calm, unresisted and looked fine,” said Solis, the man’s son.
With Solis Cortez being the main provider of his family, his family is now seeing what steps they can take to survive. The man’s family consists of three children and four grandchildren.
“I miss him and there are a lot of people here who will help him,” Solis said. “He has a lot of support and I can’t wait to see him.”
While the Southla family navigates their new reality, the family head is overwhelmed and plagued by the detention of her husband.
“It’s difficult,” Solis said of his mother. “She’s here, but she barely eats. She’s crying, she’s worried. I try not to show her that I’m crying.
Solis Cortez moved from Mexico to the United States in 1999. He has no criminal history, his parents said. The man’s family was able to contact him at the Otay Mesa detention center, where he was located. It is unclear how long he will be there.
“I told him everything was going to be fine and we’re working through it,” Solis said. “We’re trying to bring him back as soon as possible.”
In the meantime, families have set up a GoFundMe page to support legal costs.
