It is almost certain that the former New York governor will not be competing in the general election as an independent candidate. After the defeat, his supporters are considering shifting their support for Eric Adams or another independent candidate.

“Understanding is that he’s not running, and all the indications are that he doesn’t want to do it, and even if he wants to do it, the money won’t be there,” one source said.

However, Cuomo told the Post Wednesday that he wanted to better understand what the general election would look like before making an official decision.

In response to questions about Cuomo’s dropout from the race, a spokesman for his campaign told Fox News Digital, “Anyone tells you that he’s not talking to the governor.”

Cuomo admitted to Mamdani in the New York Citizens’ Party primary on Tuesday night, and to supporters at the election night gathering where his opponent “won.”
“Tonight is Mamdani’s night and he put together a great campaign,” Cuomo said Tuesday in front of supporters. “He touched and inspired young people, he made them move, he got them out and voted. He ran a really, really shocking campaign. I called him. I congratulated him. I sincerely praised him for his efforts.”

Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assembly member from Queens, originally from Uganda, surpassed the former three-term governor and nine other candidates in a busy major field in an election determined by votes ranked in the election. He will be considered the front line in the general election in the heavy blue city in November.
