A hit-and-run driver linked to a possible street takeover in South Los Angeles attacked and killed the bike, police said Wednesday.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, 34-year-old Jose Villalobos was attacked at the intersection of Century Boulevard and San Pedro Street while riding his bike.
Investigators believe the driver or vehicle may have been involved in one of several street takeovers that took place in the area on June 1. Around the time of the crash, a major street buying occurred within a mile of the incident and was disbanded by police. Ryan Moreno said at a press conference.
Surveillance video released by LAPD shows a silver two-door chevrolet Camaro with a separate black racing stripe hitting the villain as he approaches San Pedro Street.
“(He) has a son, a sibling, and a family in the area. I know they’re pretty upset and quite distraught,” Moreno said.
After the collision, the bike was stuck under the tires of the suspect’s vehicle and dragged it to spark. The suspect continued on to the 110 highway without help, Moreno said.
Police believe the male suspect entered the liquor store before hitting and killing Villalobos.
Century Boulevard is one of the area’s “frequently traveled” streets, Moreno said.
“You’re a pedestrian, on a bike, on a scooter, on a skateboard, whatever it is, you have to be safe with your own hands. Don’t assume people are looking at you, don’t assume you’re looking at you.
Police are investigating other surveillance videos from the area prior to the incident.
