Former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio believes that fears about Zoran Mamdani’s victory in the Democratic primary are highly exaggerated on Wednesday.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist approved by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, claimed victory at New York City’s Democratic Mayor Primary on Tuesday after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recognized the race.

The outcome of the race should be determined by counts ranked on July 1, but Mamdani’s far left policy proposals have caused unease among more moderate Democrats.

De Blasio downplayed these fears and argued that many of Mamdani’s proposals, including creating a free bus network, expanding grocery stores, and implementing rent controls, are being tested in other cities.

“These are not incredible ideas. If he wants to tax the wealthy, he has to get Congressional approval, and they may give it,” said de Blasio.

The main NYC upset signal of DEM socialists indicates “generational” change in the Democrats, strategists say

“I think there’s a lot of exaggeration here, and I’m not going to see people leaving in large numbers,” de Blasio said. “They said it would happen when I became mayor. It didn’t happen. I just don’t buy it.”

De Blasio, who served as mayor of New York City between 2014 and 2022, argued that Mamdani’s success was due to its focus on “kitchen table issues.”

“Here we talked all day long about affordable prices and rent. He talked about life, the basics of food, and how people struggle to achieve their goals,” de Blasio said.

The former mayor predicted that police would not be repaid under the future of Mamdani administration.

“In the end, he thinks that because this place is so expensive and working and middle class people struggle to live here, he will focus on the kinds that everyday New Yorkers want here beyond the ideological spectrum,” De Blasio said.
