Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions on Thursday that he called the fatal fentanyl flow “necessary” to “deter and dismantle” the United States.

The new policy imposes new visa restrictions on the families of foreign drug traffickers and close individuals and business associates.

Speaking to reporters Thursday afternoon, State Department spokesman Tommy Piggott said the move “not only prevents them from entering the United States, but also serves as a deterrent to ongoing illegal activities.”

In a statement released by the State Department, Rubio stressed the importance of further expanding sanctions to stop the flow of fentanyl and other drugs within the country.

“The US fentanyl crisis is unprecedented, with overdose among Americans ages 18 to 44 continuing to be the main cause of death,” Rubio said.

The State Department says it has provided guidance to more than 25,000 people in Israel, the West Bank and Iran.

The secretary said, “It is reported that over 40% of Americans know who died from opioid overdose, and in 2024, the US died from an average of overdose overdose,” the US said.

“Today’s actions are expanding into existing tools,” he said, adding that the State Department “will use all the necessary tools to prevent and dismantle fentanyl and other illegal drugs from entering the United States and hurting US citizens.”

Fentanyl is a dangerous drug and is often trafficked to the United States across the southern and northern borders by cartels and other criminal elements. According to the CDC, in 2024, fentanyl was associated with 48,422 deaths in the US.

During his campaign, President Donald Trump vowed to fight a war with fentanyl traffickers by increasing border security and cracking down on illegal immigration. Since taking office, Trump has deployed US troops to the southern border, targeting cartels and cross-border criminal groups as “foreign terrorist organizations,” and attacking cartel leaders with sanctions.

According to the Center for Immigration Research (CIS), the seizure of fentanyl by US law enforcement is “a key indicator of the ports of entry at the tropical border and the broader smuggling between them,” but it has fallen 50% since the November election. The CIS says the significant decrease indicates a “significant reduction in total clusters of fentanyl smuggling.”

In May, Attorney General Pam Bondy announced that the seizure of 409 kilos of fentanyl tablets and 11.5 kilos of fentanyl powder made authorities one of the largest fentanyl busts in US history. Bondy said about 35 kilos of methamphetamine, 35 kilos of methane, 7.5 kilos of cocaine and 4.5 kilos of heroin were also seized along with $5 million in cash and 49 rifles and pistols.

Sixteen people, including three women, were arrested for surgery. According to Bondi, six men are illegally in the United States.

“If we fall in love with all these individuals, if we are convicted, we will put you behind the bar. There are no negotiations and we will lock you up as much as possible as humanly possible,” Bondy said. “We don’t negotiate with people who are killing their families, including brothers, sisters, daughters, sons, parents, friends, everyone in this room.”
