Several communities in Los Angeles County have canceled or postponed previously scheduled Independence Day and July events, citing residents’ safety amid ongoing immigration enforcement raids.
The El Sereno Bicentennial Committee was one of the first organisations to announce the cancellation of the 66th Independence Day Parade in a June 20 statement on Facebook.
“We stand in our community. The safety of our participants, audiences and volunteers is always on the forefront,” according to the post.
The celebration usually consists of many local organizations, schools and entertainment groups, with over 12,000 people marching in the parade, according to the committee.
However, many groups retracted entries from this year’s parade, ultimately leading to the committee’s decision.
Ongoing raids across Los Angeles with Home Depot parking lots, popular food vendor locations and car washes have caused fear among residents.
“You can see the effects of these random assaults everywhere in our city. Families are scared of eating in restaurants. Children are scared of parents returning from the store.

The July 4th festivities in Boyle Heights, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights and Northeast Los Angeles, sponsored by the office of Los Angeles City Councilman Isabel Jurado, have been postponed. At this time, new dates for events are not available. The city of Kadahi has postponed the Independence Day celebration, set for Thursday, July 3rd. The city has not yet provided new dates for the event.
