The University of Virginia president resigned on Friday after facing strong pressure from the Trump administration on institutional diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

James E. Ryan, who has been leading the school since 2018, said he has already decided that next year will be his last, and that he has decided until then to “not fight the federal government to save his job.”

To keep the long story short, I tend to fight for what I believe, and I believe deeply at this university, “Ryan wrote to the UVA community on Friday.” Doing so will not only be Quixotic, but selfish and self-centered to hundreds of employees who lose their jobs, researchers who lose their funds, hundreds of students who may lose financial aid or withhold visas. ”

“This is especially true because I decided that next year will be my last one for a completely different reason than this episode, including the fact that I have ended the capital campaign and implemented almost all of the major initiatives in the strategic planning,” he continued.

University of Virginia’s management committee leader Robert D. Hardy, in a statement, added that he was “an extraordinary president” accepting Ryan’s resignation of “deep sadness” and that the facility has led to “unprecedented heights” that have changed for the better as a result of Jim’s exceptional leadership.

This comes after the Trump administration privately demanded that the university eliminate Ryan and helps to resolve the Justice Department investigation into education institutions’ DEI practices, according to the New York Times.

The Justice Department allegedly argued that Ryan did not dismantle the school’s DEI programs and misrepresented measures taken to eliminate them in the administration’s efforts to eradicate DEIs in higher education.

Federal government moves aimed at higher education include withdrawing billions of dollars from elite universities such as Harvard University. This has been the subject of investigation by various agencies on issues such as DEI initiatives, admissions practices and suspected anti-Semitism on campus.

However, this was the first time the administration has pressured universities to remove the president.

“Day’s false virtue signal has no place in our country. The Trump administration is tirelessly trying to erase this divisive, backward and unjust practice from our society,” White House spokesman Harrison Fields told Fox News Digital.

“The university president willing to break the federal civil rights laws will be filled with the full power of the federal government, prioritizing the civil rights of all students and ending the DEI will be a complete jailing of all schools in America,” he continued.

Ryan focused on increasing diversity at the university, attracting more first-generation students and encouraging community service. These efforts disrupt the feathers of conservative alumni and Republican board members, claiming he was “too awakened” and wanted to impose his beliefs on students.

Before his time as university president, Ryan served as dean of Harvard School of Education, where he was recognized for his commitment to the DEI program.

In a joint statement, a Virginia Democrat senator said it was “outrageous” for the administration to demand Ryan’s resignation against the “culture war” trap.

“The UVA leadership decisions belong to a visitor committee, in line with Virginia’s well-established and respected system of higher education governance,” said Mark Warner send and Tim Kane. “This is a mistake that will hurt Virginia’s future.”

The conservative group denounced Ryan for what they viewed as an inadequate step towards compliance with the administration’s plan to eliminate Day. America First Legal, a nonprofit launched by Trump advisor Stephen Miller, accused the University of Virginia last month of rebranding its DEI program and skirting Trump’s executive order aimed at ending its diversity initiative.

“Rebranding discrimination is not legal, and changing labels does not change the content,” said Megan Redshaw, a lawyer for First Legal, USA, in a statement at the time. “UVA’s use of sanitized language and recycled work titles is a deliberate attempt to avoid the law.”

The group pointed out that, directly at Ryan, he joined hundreds of other university presidents in signing an official statement denounced the administration’s “overreach and political interference.”

On Friday, the group vowed to eradicate DEI using all the tools available.

“The developments this week are clear. Public universities accepting federal funds do not have a license to violate the Constitution,” RedShow said in a statement to the Associated Press. “They cannot impose ideological loyalty tests, enforce race- and gender-based preferences, or deficient against legitimate enforcement.”
