The popular Eagle Rock food truck was temporarily abandoned on Saturday after employees were sent running, fearing the possibility of an attack by nearby immigrants.
An employee at the Taco truck said the workers fled after finding a suspicious vehicle and receiving tips on immigration officers in the area.
The business was still left in the register with hot plates, drinks and cash.
“We just saw the cars, that’s all. We left before we could see them,” said Miguel Romero, a food truck chef. “We don’t have to be here, and we have nothing to do but hide.”
Residents say the trucks were bustling hours ago, until the words of a nearby federal agent spread.
“It could be whose family. They’re just trying to make a living. It’s breaking your heart,” witness Ron Davis said.
Food truck employees are among many communities due to ongoing immigration enforcement operations across Southern California.
“If you leave your home like you have a target, you can’t imagine the fear you have to feel,” said Catty Lahoon, who lives in Eagle Rock. “It’s heartbreaking. This is right now in Los Angeles.”
The food truck closed its doors a few hours after a terrifying moment.
“It’s complicated because it can’t work properly,” Romero said.
The NBCLA contacted Ice and DHS but did not confirm whether immigration enforcement took place in Eagle Rock on Saturday.
