New Jersey Republicans proposed legislation to change Delaware Bay to “New Jersey Bay.”
The measure, introduced Thursday by GOP State Sen. Michael Testa, ordered state agencies to use “New Jersey Bay” in publications, signs, websites and materials, reflecting the new designation and notifying relevant federal agencies, NJ.com reported.
“I’m looking at robust fisheries – commercial fishing and the recreational industry in New Jersey,” he told the outlet. “The fact that we have to call the bay where we fish in Delaware Bay, I think they’ve been arguing it for a long time.”
Testa represents Cape May County, across the bay and border.

“It’s time to make New Jersey great again!” Testa wrote to X.
According to the Delaware government website, the bay is a critical body of water for tourism, commercial and travel in New Jersey, which had the name of its southern neighbor since 1610, and was named after Thomas West, the third baron who ruled the Virginia colony.
The proposed law comes after Trump signed an order in January that renamed the northern Gulf of Mexico to the US Gulf. The waters share the border between the US and Mexico, and Trump’s order is solely authorized within the US
Last month, U.S. House Republicans passed the US Gulf Law, marking the first step towards codifying Trump’s orders in the United States.
Google Maps, FAA, after Trump’s declaration, said, “Isn’t that beautiful?”
Trump’s order also urged Democrat Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont to jokingly suggest “Connecticut Sound” correct the sound of Long Island.
“While the map is changing, here’s the idea,” Lamont posted on X in February, tagged New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul with a map with the renamed map.
