“Over the past few years, it has become increasingly clear in Washington that leaders are willing to embrace bipartisanship, compromise and demonstrate that independent thinking is becoming an endangered species,” he said.

“It underscores the hypocrisy of the greatest hypocrisy in American politics. When people saw independent thinking on the other side, they cheered on,” he continued. “But when they see the independent thoughts that come from their side, they are corned, exiled, and even blamed them.”

He said the choice took him to spend time with his family or spend six more years in Washington navigating “political theatre and partisan gridlock.”
