Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee, who preempted the provisions of one big beautiful bill law on Saturday evening, which would allow the sale of federal land for development after widespread rage among his conservative colleagues.
“Over the past few weeks, I have spent a lot of time listening to community members, local leaders and stakeholders. There has been an incredible amount of misinformation, but in some cases, many people have raised honest concerns about my bill,” Lee said in a message posted on his X account Saturday night.
Lee, who chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said that “these lands are protected to ensure that only American families are sold,” not China or businesses, but he pulled the provision after failing to ensure protection. The senator on Monday determined that the original language of the clause was not compliant with strict rules relating to what could be included in the settlement law, and Lee’s office resubmitted the clause in a new language before fully eliciting it on Saturday evening.
Lee said the US government owns too many mismanaged lands, and has maintained its longtime status in the most notable western states of leaving a higher tax burden.

“I continue to believe that the federal government owns too much land. Land is mismanaged and often ruined for the next generation,” Lee wrote in his post. “Under the Democratic president, the large strips of the West are trapped away from the people who live there without meaningful reliance.”
Lee had included a mandate to sell millions of acres of federal land in his draft tax cut package earlier this month. He preemptively pulled the clause on Saturday prior to the procedural vote. Several Republican lawmakers in both rooms have publicly condemned the provisions and said they would vote against the bill if it was included.
“We have the vote to hit it,” Montana Sen. Steve Daines said Thursday of Lee’s regulations. “i am ready.”

“The people of Idahore were clear. They don’t support the sale of public land to the highest bidder. We are proud to lead an effort to remove this provision from one big beautiful bill,” Sen. Jim Rich, a Republican Idaho, posted to X after Lee posted to X.
