The Trump administration has called on the city of Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass and the city council over the policy of the sanctuary city.
The lawsuit alleges that the ordinance violates the constitution because it prevents immigration law enforcement.
“Los Angeles ordinances and other policies will intentionally interfere with the sharing of information contemplated by Congress, thereby preventing federal arrest and detention of removable aliens, including dangerous offenders, as required by federal law,” the lawsuit states.
“The law of the banist sanctuary city prevents Los Angeles officials and law enforcement from assisting federal immigration officials unless federal officials procure criminal arrest warrants to obtain removable alien custody.”
The lawsuit notes that “despite the city of Los Angeles’ preferences, the council made a clear policy choice that such removal could be implemented through a civil arrest warrant for immigration enforcement.”
“Today’s lawsuits retain the city of Los Angeles’ responsibility for deliberately obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws. The U.S. Constitution’s superiority clause prohibits federal law from choosing which federal laws are not enforced,” US lawyer Bill Essayli said in a social media post.
“By helping removable foreigners avoid federal law enforcement, the city’s illegal and discriminatory ordinances contributed to an unsafe environment without laws that would help end this case,” the Post continued.
