Kevin Devine was last seen outside of Altadena’s Boston Street Apartment on January 7th after the fatal Eaton Fire was fired. A few weeks passed without his words of destiny.
The county prosecutor’s office confirmed that 54-year-old Devine was killed in the fire. His body was found on April 2nd in the 900 block of Boston Street, one block east of Lake Avenue.
He is the 18th person known to have died in Etonfire and the only perishing victim east of Lake Avenue. Devine was identified on the Medical Inspector’s website on April 22nd.
Actor and substitute teacher Devine spoke to her concerned mother in Michigan on the evening of January 7th.
“I said, ‘Kevin, you have to leave,'” Margaret Devine told the Times in January. “He said, ‘I’m fine, mom.”
Devine’s landlord saw him in his car outside his apartment around 9pm. This is about three hours after the fire broke out on the hillside above Eton Canyon Wash.
When the emergency crew flocculated the burnt streets of Altadena the following day, Devine was nowhere to be found. There were no signs of his car. His family was called hospitals and evacuation shelters. They began to talk about him in the past tense.
On April 2, the special operations team at the medical inspector’s office responded to a report of the possible human remains found in the block he was last seen. The office then confirmed that they belonged to Devine, who died of burns and smoke inhalation.
Thirty people are known to have been killed in the Pallisard and Eton fires, destroying more than 16,000 homes in Los Angeles County in early January. All have been publicly identified, but one person whose body was found on Las Lomas Avenue in Pacific Palisard.
