Long Beach and San Pedro will hold sailing events during the 2028 Olympics, officials announced Monday.
LA Port will host six boat events, including male and female dinghy, skiff, mixed dinghy and mixed multihull.
“Sailing has a long history in our city and San Pedro shines on the world stage,” Karen Bass said in a statement.
LA28, the Olympic Organising Committee, was the first to announce that Long Beach will be holding 11 events. However, Tim Makosker, of the LA City Council, representing the Port of Los Angeles area, has advocated for a voyage event to be held in San Pedro as well.
“We look forward to working with LA28 to help the game promote the sport, inspire fans, highlight the enormous talent of athletes, and showcase Larber and the city of Los Angeles’ best talent on the global stage,” Makoscar said.
During the 1932 Olympics, LA Port hosted sailing in the outer port area and will be re-used in 2028.
LA28 also said the sailing event will be performed in succession in windsurfing and kiteboarding at Long Beach, followed by the boat racing portion of the sailing competition in San Pedro.
In addition to sailing competitions, the city will host beach volleyball at Aramitos Beach, coastal rowing at nearby waterfronts, target shooting at Long Beach Convention Center, sports climbing in the site’s parking lot, and water polo and artistic swimming in the temporary pool.
“Long Beach is the premier location for Windsurfing and Kite, two outstanding events that will captivate audiences,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement.
