California State Senator Aveno Valencia (D-Anaheim) has introduced a bill aimed at preventing youth football leagues from banning padded helmet add-ons, similar to those worn by NFL players to reduce concussions.
In a news release, Valencia’s office highlighted evidence that tackles in football put young players at risk of concussions.
“A study conducted by Virginia Tech has demonstrated that the softshell helmet add-on significantly reduces impact force, leading to a 24.7% reduction in the risk of concussion. In particular, the NFL has already adopted this technology in its players, highlighting its effectiveness and reliability,” the release states.
Valencia, who played football in San Jose state last year, introduced a bill banning Preton’s tackle football. However, in a rare move, Gov. Gavin Newsom defeated the proposal.
He believes in this proposal, the AB 708, that is the best equipment sold under the Guardian Cap brand.
The Guardian Cap brand previously spoke to youth leagues that banned the use of the equipment, citing concerns that the add-on could override the safety certifications that soccer helmets already have.
Still, medical groups are supporting the measure, along with National Cheer Safety Foundation, Fullerton Pop Warner Football and the cheering organization.
