The Orange County retiree realized their marine dreams when they moved on cruise ships for the next 15 years.
Speaking to NBCLA from the current port in Vancouver on Tuesday, Sharon Lane said her decision to ride a Villa Vee only took her around ten minutes.
“Not only was it affordable for me, but I actually have less money to live here like this and everyone will take care of me instead of taking care of me,” said the 77-year-old retired foreign language teacher.
Lane said when the lease expired in Lagna Woods, a popular retirement community in Orange County, she decided to buy the ship on board from Villavier.
Lane said she also lives in Los Angeles and San Bernardino.
She moved to the boat on June 16th.
Lane didn’t want to disclose exactly what she paid, but the company said interior villas like her would cost $129,999. This is a one-time fee. According to Villa Vie, residents will pay all low $3,000 including food, beer and wine, housekeeping, laundry, WiFi, daily activities and full access to all vessel amenities and facilities.
“All the chores you do in your life? I did it!” Lane said. “If you put your to-do list on paper and remove anything that isn’t a fun activity, you’ll be living now.”
Lane said she has children and grandchildren who were all “onboard” in her decision to live as a retired person at sea.
