With a record number of Americans fastening their seatbelts to travel on the weekend of July 4th, the California Highway Patrol plans to “fully” all executives.
The agency will begin a statewide holiday enforcement period from July 3rd to July 6th to help drive safely on holiday weekends.
Citing “the continuing need for enhanced enforcement,” executives will focus on offensive drivers with disabilities, the agency said.
“Reckless driving and speeding have fatal consequences,” CHP Commissioner Sean Dury said in a statement.
The enforcement period begins at 6:01pm on Thursdays and continues until 11:59pm on Sundays.
In a 24-hour execution last month, Highway Patrol officials arrested nearly 400 people for driving under the influence, and issued around 18,000 citations for excessive speed, distraction and seat belt violations, CHP said. According to the agency, 11 people crashed during the period.
“It’s all the drivers’ responsibility to make safe choices behind the wheels. Let’s work together to prevent tragedy by always specifying plain drivers and keeping the roads safe for everyone,” says Duryee.
The CHP reminds residents to “bend and designate and designate a calm driver” whether they’re traveling to a fireworks show or returning home from a barbecue.
The AAA forecasts that 61.6 million people will travel by car on holiday weekends, with over 72 million Americans expected to travel domestically.
