The Senate Republican leader has convinced R-Alaska Sen. Lisa Markowski to vote in favor of President Donald Trump’s “Big Beautiful Building” and to vote on a series of spending and initiatives in her hometown.
Negotiations over the bill were extended 11 hours before the bill was passed Tuesday. Markovsky opposed the law until it secured clean energy tax credits, oil drilling lease guarantees, and other priorities in her state. She was seen roaming the Senate floor with blankets in the second half of the Senate “Votes – Llama” and holding a notepad.
“I’ve raised my head and made sure that Alaskans will never forget this, but I think we need to do it. “But I’m going to take a nap.”
“What I was trying to do was for my colleagues to understand what it means when you live in an area where you don’t have jobs. That’s not a cash economy,” she added. “And I needed help and I worked to get it every day.”

Senate majority leader John Tune may have previously secured Markovsky’s vote, if not for the Senate who overthrew several trade sweeteners aimed at Alaska. The Senate passed Trump’s bill under the settlement process, but this requires only a simple majority. Congress has the authority to determine whether a particular line item is outside the scope of the budget settlement, so a majority of 60 votes is required.

But some of the sweeteners have done that, including allowing temporary delays in cost hiking for food assistance programs in both Hawaii and Alaska. Murkowski also ensured planned tax removal on solar and wind energy projects.

House Speaker Mike Johnson led Republicans on Wednesday passing a procedural “rules” vote to raise the law overnight. The speaker has lost three Republican votes and can still afford to pass the bill. The two have already confirmed that they are opposed to passing the Senate version of the bill.
