A warehouse that stores fireworks in California started a fire Tuesday, which exploded on Tuesday, sending fireballs into the air, firing debris and causing fireworks to explode on top of the site, according to staff and videos.
The European County Sheriff’s Office said a warehouse near the Esparto area northwest of Sacramento has exploded and is on active fire.
Curtis Lawrence, a fire prevention district in Esparto, did not comment to reporters on whether he was injured Tuesday night, according to NBC News.
“It’s all very preliminary now,” he said.
Firefighters responded to the fire around 5:50pm and discovered “several commercial buildings are fully involved and numerous explosions and numerous spot fires throughout the area.”
Helicopter video, filmed by NBC affiliate KCRA in Sacramento, showed fires at the facility, including fires that flare up at least one building and fireworks that explode when fired into the air.
In this video, there is a lot of airburst from the fireworks, with white smoke rushing through the roof from inside the building in front of a large explosion and a fireball.
The cause of the fire and explosion was unknown Tuesday night, the sheriff’s office said.
Lawrence said the fire in one large warehouse caused multiple spot fires, covering a total of about 80 acres.
The Sonoma Lake Napa Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said it is in response to commercial and vegetation fires in Yolo County.
The agency known as Cal Fire is investigating the cause of the fire, but a representative from the sheriff’s office said Tuesday night there were clearly no criminals. Drones were used to assess damage.
European County issued an evacuation order for what firefighters called the Oakdale fire, but some were allowed to return Tuesday night. People from the south of Highway 16 remained under evacuation orders.
Esparto is a community about 30 miles northwest of Sacramento.
The explosion occurred near the Espert-Madison border, which is east, the Sheriff’s Office said.
