Angelenos will have one less urban-owned pool to visit this summer as the historic Griffith Park Pool is scheduled for $28 million renovations.
The pool has not been filled since 2020. It was scheduled to reopen in June 2022, but city workers discovered that the pool had cracked bases, as originally reported on the news site The East Sider.
The renovation project aims to modernize aging facilities.
According to the report, the project is currently in its pre-design phase and a formal kickoff meeting is scheduled for December 2024.
The overhaul includes a complete structural retrofit and internal reconstruction of the two-storey Spanish colonial revival style pool house.
The plan calls for an expansion and modernization of changing areas as well as updating the decor on the first and second floors. Family toilets and unisex food stalls will be added to both male and female changing areas, with enclosed potentially heated deck shower areas being built.
The existing pool will be replaced by a new 25 yard x 50 meter competition pool, along with a 25 yard x 25 yard splash pad for recreational purposes.
The renovation also increases accessibility, with ADA-compliant paths connecting bus stops near Los Ferris Boulevard and Riverside Drive to the pool and adjacent playground.
Construction is expected to begin in September 2026 and is expected to be completed by March 2028.
The project, managed by the Engineering Bureau Alex Ngo, will be divided into four council districts represented by Councillor Nityaraman. No contractor has been selected yet.
In the meantime, residents of the area can beat the heat by visiting the city-run pools of Echo Park, Hollywood and Grassel Park.
