Use these tips to keep your furry friends safe on July 4th – NBC Los Angeles

Ahead of the July 4th weekend, the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services announced on Thursday some recommendations to keep Angelenos’ furry friends safe and prevent them from ending in shelters.

City officials said that over the weekend of July 4th, more pets could get lost and be placed in shelters while owners were searching.

According to an analysis by Shelter Animal Count, the days following the July 4th festival are the highest intake of stray dogs each year.

The department encouraged pet owners to microchip the animal or provide pets with tags with modern identification. Pet owners can also register their pets with Petco Love Lost, a free database that uses photo matching technology that helps them reunite their lost pet with their families.

According to a survey by the Animal Cruelty Prevention Association, about half of the missing dogs and a third of the missing cats were found by searching their local neighborhoods.

The department encouraged individuals who could do so to provide temporary home care to lost or lost companion animals in their neighborhoods through shelter programs.

The program will expand LA Animal Services foster parenting program, increase community involvement and enable pets to be held in less stressful environments, while helping animals find owners.

If a community member finds a lost pet, is unable to find an owner, and is unable to provide temporary foster care, they are encouraged to call (888) 452-7381 and plan to take their pet to the nearest animal service centre.

LA Animal Services reminded city residents that fireworks are illegal and should be kept away from pets.

To report fireworks in the neighborhood, residents can call the Los Angeles Police Department’s non-emergency number (877) 257-5273 or file a complaint online.

Another tip the department has provided is to create a peaceful space for your pets. It is best to ensure that your pets stay indoors and in enclosed rooms and ensure that the gates and fences are safe if the animal allows animals outside, LA Animal Services said.

If the pet appears to be sick or injured, the owner should immediately take him or her to the nearest animal service center.

The city’s six animal shelters are open Tuesday through Friday from 8am to 5pm and on weekends from 11am to 5pm.
