Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Thursday that he recalls the Charge Die A A A A A A A A A A Internum from Bogota, Colombia.
The State Department said John T. McNamara, interim at the U.S. Embassy in Colombia, was recalled to Washington for urgent consultations on “an unfounded, condemnable statement from the highest level of the Colombian government.”
“In addition to recalling the charge, the US is pursuing other measures to clarify our deep concerns about the current state of our bilateral relations,” the press release read. “Despite the current policy differences with the government, Colombia remains an important strategic partner,” the release continued. “We are committed to working closely on various priorities, including local safety and stability, and we continue to work in efforts to improve both Americans and Colombians.”
The decision was not available regarding the diplomatic recall after Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused “right-wing extremists” of trying to overthrow him.

The Associated Press reported in May that Peter’s former foreign minister, Alvaro Leiba, had accused him of being “addicted” for the second time in three weeks.
Leiba also reportedly issued a seven-page letter to X to resign to Peter, claiming that the president “relies on substances that affect emotional and mental equilibrium.”
One year after being elected and appointed in 2022, Peter denied the charges during his speech in Bogota. There he argued that he was “revolutionary” and “unslaved” by drugs.

Leiba previously accused Peter of taking drugs in a letter released on April 22. Leiba said Petro “got missing” for several days during his state visit in Paris, attributed his absence to drug use. However, Peter said he took the time to visit his French relatives.
Regarding US-Colombia relations, both countries agreed in March to deploy biometric capabilities to help authorities manage migration and halt criminal activity.
The agreement comes months after President Donald Trump and Petro clashed over the treatment of Colombians in deportation from the US.

In January, US authorities sent two flights of Colombian illegal aliens back to their country of origin, but Petro refused the flight, saying, “We cannot treat Colombian immigrants as criminals.”
Peter also called for the United States to establish protocols for the dignified treatment of immigrants.
In response, Trump threatened to release numerous penalties, including ordering a 25% tariff on all goods coming into the US from Columbia. A week later, Trump added, adding that tariffs would rise to 50%. Trump also ordered all Colombian government officials to travel bans and revoke their visas, as well as “allies and supporters.”
