People are dead after fireworks exploded in the garage of Shimi Valley home on Thursday, causing a fire and sending large black smoke into the air.
Footage shared with KTLA showed firefighters at the scene as the house in the 1600 block of Edmund Street appears to be completely enveloped in flames.
Andy Vancesiber of the Ventura County Fire Department said the incident, classified as an explosive garage fire, occurred shortly after 11:45am.
The fire spread across the attic and main parts of the house and disappeared in about an hour.
Aerial footage from Sky5 showed major damage to what appeared to be a garage in the house, with the roof partially collapsed.
The main explosion was felt by many in the neighborhood, including Brandon Singer. Brandon Singer told KTLA’s Jean Kang that his wife had heard of a “giant explosion,” but initially thought it was an earthquake.
“I checked the charts and stuff and I didn’t see any earthquakes, but she sent me a picture of this huge smoke feather,” he said.
VCFD’s Scott Thomson explained how strong the explosion is.
“The panels on the garage door were blown across the street into my neighbor’s yard,” he said.
In the update, police said the fireworks should be held responsible, and as a result, one person died. The victim’s identity was not released immediately.
Authorities previously said the person was hospitalized.
