Police confirmed Saturday that an 8-year-old girl was killed after being attacked by an illegal fireworks display in Orange County on July 4th.
It was around 9:45pm, when officers patrolling the 8,000 block of Cornflower Circle were seen desperately transporting their family to a nearby home, according to the Buena Park Police Department.
“The officers are already in this neighborhood after seeing a massive amount of fireworks exploded in the area,” BPPD said.
Watching the family run through the young girls inside, officials ran up to provide help and began an effort to save lives before the child was taken to the University of California Irvine Hospital.
The 8-year-old girl was declared tragically dead in a hospital. Her identity is withheld in honor of her family.
The initial investigation by BPPD revealed that a nearby homeowner has departed a “large illegal fireworks display” on the streets.
“This sparked other illegal fireworks, but they were close to children and others,” BPPD said in the release. “At one point, the child was hit and caused a fatal injury. There were several other individuals, but no serious injuries were reported.”
Police said the homeowner who lit an illegal fireworks has since been arrested, and the charges are pending review from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. Their names were not released anytime soon.
The police department said it is continuing to investigate the incident with the Orange County Fire Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s bomb squad.
