Immigration rights activists will be taking part in a run with ICE along the 15-mile route from Koreatown to Placita Orvera on Saturday morning and through other communities that have witnessed attacks and arrests by immigration and customs enforcement agents in recent weeks.
Organizers called it a “non-violent resistance journey through Los Angeles,” and said it was part of a 30-day “Summer of Resistance” campaign designed to promote ice raids and deportation.
Over 2,000 people have registered to participate in the running. This includes a stop at Downtown Metropolitan Detention Center on Alameda Street, the site of multiple clashes between immigration-related arrests and people protesting law enforcement officials.
The latest arrests were reported Saturday after a large group of protesters in downtown Los Angeles on July 4th blocked traffic in downtown Los Angeles amid opposition to other government immigration enforcement raids and other policies in President Donald Trump’s administration.
The “End of Occupation” rally began Friday morning outside city hall and continued into the afternoon and evening, with hundreds of protesters marching through the downtown area, police National Guard and some Marines standing guards.
The event was sponsored by Group 50501 SoCal in collaboration with SEIU Local 721, Carecen, Ndlon and The Community Power Collective.
In the video of the scene, many people were seen raising flags of pride, flags of Mexico, the US, California and Palestinian, and filled with 15 feet tall helium in Russian military uniforms.
Los Angeles police said demonstrators blocked both sides of Alameda Street by placing traffic barriers on the road. Police issued a dispersing order around 7pm, ordering everyone to leave the area. LAPD said the crowd quickly disbanded, but Alameda was between First Street and Aliso, and First Street between San Pedro and Alameda remained closed until notification.
At 8:28pm, police said all traffic was open in Alameda, but the LAPD unit said they had been sent to clear the Sixth Street Bridge following reports that people were parked vehicles there.
Police later said “multiple arrests” were “during several different demonstrations at the DTLA” on Friday. Mostly peaceful, but as the evening approached, the outside agitators began to cause problems.
“We require that all damage or vandalism be documented through photographs and videos and be transferred to the central department,” LAPD added.
A similar July 4 protest was scheduled to take place nationwide.
Up to four people were detained in a federal immigration enforcement attack at a local car wash in the West Hollywood area earlier Friday, according to multiple media reports.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent carried out the attack at Santa Palm Car Wash at 8787 Santa Monica Boulevard around 11am Friday.
West Hollywood officials condemned the attack.
“On a day that is meant to respect the ideals of freedom, democracy and freedom from oppression, we will instead face the deeply troubling reminders of the federal government’s overreach. Independence Day should be a time of reflection and respect, not fear and persecution,” they said.
ICE officials did not respond to requests for comment.
Also on Friday, the fan group Angel City Brigade held a strike in the 12th minute of LA Galaxy’s match against Vancouver at Carson’s Dignity Health Sports Park. The group said “It has protested the silence of the LA Galaxy administration in the wake of the recent ice attacks and cited a lack of support for the community.”
Federal authorities have been conducting a series of immigration attacks in Los Angeles County since June 6th, sparking widespread street protests and condemnation.
