Three people, including an 8-year-old girl, were killed in separate fireworks-related incidents in Southern California over Independence Day weekend.
The first responders of the weekend responded to a fireworks-related injury call as the family celebrated on July 4th. However, three of these calls resulted in death.
Thursday
In Pacoima, one person was killed and five were injured in a fireworks explosion, resulting in a multi-chamber fire. Blaze was reported shortly after 9pm in the 12,900 block of Corcoran Street, with 18 people evacuated.
Officials did not disclose the deceased’s name, but described him as a man in his 30s.
Meanwhile, in Shimi Valley, another explosion caused by fireworks took his life. The incident was reported in the 1600 block of Edmund Street, where the deceased was found in the garage of the home where the explosion occurred.
Law enforcement did not share the names of the deceased.
Friday
An 8-year-old girl was killed in a fireworks-related explosion in Buena Park after a homeowner placed a large fireworks display on the street and accidentally set the house on fire.
The incident was reported around 9:45pm in the 8000 block of Cornflower Circle. There, the first fireworks that set off led to other illegal fireworks lit near where the girl and others were.
Her identity has not been revealed in honor of her family.
Fireworks safety
The Los Angeles County Fire Department warns that if not properly dealt with it, it could lead to injuries, death and property destruction. People are encouraging people to attend nationally licensed fireworks shows to minimize the risk of injuries and death.
When using “safe and sane” fireworks sold by a former state firefighter retailer, the handler is required to read carefully the direction, light the object one at a time, then quickly leave, and be ready for the bucket in an emergency.
