As Elon Musk moves forward by forming a third party in the hopes of shaking the country’s longtime two-party system, the world’s wealthiest person is reaching out to a former presidential candidate who started his own independent party.
Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, spent the first four months of President Donald Trump’s second administration as a special White House advisor, piloting the recently created Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and speaking with Andrew Yang.
A source familiar with the conversation said the two discussed Musk’s driving forces to create the “American Party.”

“I’m excited for anyone wanting to move from the second layer,” Yang said in a Fox News statement. “And I’m happy that you helped someone give you a sense of what the path looks like.” News of the conversation was first reported by Politico.
Yang attracted the attention of the public during the 2020 election cycle. The entrepreneur has gone from an extreme long shot to the Democratic presidential nomination.
Yang, however, has deteriorated in the two-party system after failing to succeed in 2021 in New York City mayor. He then formed an independent forward party. This is recognized in a small number of states and aims to ultimately gain voting access from coast to coast.

Yang and Musk are far from strangers. Musk in 2019 supported Yang’s failed presidential bid.
Musk became the top donor of the 2024 election cycle, handing out nearly $300 million to support Trump’s bids through the US PAC, a superpack of mask funds that Trump is allied with.

Trump nominated masks to pilot Doge shortly after the November election, and the president repeatedly praised Musk during his headline-making and controversial tenure in his cost-cutting efforts.
However, the feud between Musk and Trump broke out a few days after Musk left the White House in late May. Musk dubbed the administration’s massive landmark spending bill, which Trump called his “big beautiful bill.”

Musk also claimed that Trump failed to win last year’s presidential election without all his support.
Musk announced the launch of the “American Party” on social media platform X on Saturday. The measure narrowly passed through the Senate and House of Representatives last week along party and votes in Republican-controlled rooms.
Trump on Sunday laughed at Musk’s move.
“I think starting a third party would be ridiculous,” Trump told reporters. “It’s always been a two-party system. I think starting a third party just adds to the confusion.

The president added, “Third parties have never done their job, so he can enjoy it, but I think it’s ridiculous.”
It is extremely difficult to start independent or third parties and gain voting access in states across the country.
